How To: Pop a Pimple

Big date coming up? Job interview? Need that pimple popped ASAP?

If possible, you should always let your pimples go away on their own. Unproperly popped pimples can lead to the spreading of bacteria, which causes more breakouts and post-acne scarring. But, if you can’t wait, here’s how to properly pop that pesky pimple to avoid spreading bacteria and preventing the chance of scarring.

My First Facial

Facials help to improve an individual’s skin texture, elasticity, and tone by preventing the damaging effects of environmental pollution and sun damage.

I got my first facial from Sego Lily Spa when I was sixteen. They have numerous facial options to choose from. Before getting a facial, make sure you know your skin’s needs and your skin type. I knew beforehand that my skin type is combination and that my main skin concerns are texture and acne. Knowing this information was beneficial in choosing what facial would be best for my skin. They offer a Signature Facial, Organic Facial, and The Ultimate Facial. The Ultimate Facial focuses on the entire body rather than just the face, I only wanted to focus on my face so I immediately knew that I did not want that option. The Organic Facial uses botanical ingredients in a deep cleansing session. The Signature Facial does a customized facial cleanse, exfoliation, steam, and extractions if needed. I wanted a more overall facial rather than just a deep cleanse, so I went with the Signature Facial. The facialist asked me what my skin type was and what concerns I was wanting to focus on. She customized the facial to my skin’s needs. We started with a cleanse, then she did an exfoliation. After, she steamed my face and she did a couple extractions. Then she applied a mask and let that sit for about 15 minutes. She then washed the mask off and followed it up with a moisturizer. The facial lasted 60 minutes and was such a relaxing experience. My face was immediately brighter and glowy. I would suggest getting a facial to anyone who just wants to care a little bit extra for their skin.

Daytime Skincare Routine

Your daytime skincare routine doesn’t have to be fifteen different steps in order to have healthy skin. A basic routine to keep your skin happy and healthy consists of cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting from the sun.

When looking for a skincare routine start with the basics. First, find a cleanser best suited for your skin type. If you have dry skin, you want to opt for an oil-based or moisturizing cleanser. If your skin is acne prone and oily, you want to opt for an oil-free cleanser with acne fighting ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If your skin is sensitive, you want to opt for a gentle, soothing cleanser or a micellar water. Then, you want to follow up with a moisturizer. If your skin is more dry, try to find a thicker moisturizing facial cream and if your skin is more oily, try to find a lighter, oil-free moisturizing facial gel. Finally, you want to protect your skin from the sun. You want to add sunscreen as your final step, this will help to prevent skin cancer, aging, and hyperpigmentation. Find a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Finding a skincare routine doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with the three basics to get your skincare journey started on the right track.

The ingredients in the products that you use on your skin can make or break your skin’s overall health and appearance. Are the products that you currently use, safe to use? Or are they causing you damage that you may not be aware of? Here’s a list of 8 ingredients that you want to avoid using on your skin:

1. Synthetic Fragrances: Avoid using anything synthetic or artificial. These synthetic fragrances are made of many ingredients that aren’t listed on the ingredient list, so you don’t know for certain what you are putting on your skin. These fragrances are also commonly used in many candles, air fresheners, etc. You wouldn’t rub an air freshener on your face, so why would you use a product that contains the same ingredients?

2. Propylene Glycol and Butylene Glycol: These ingredients penetrate into your skin so fast that they can actually weaken the cellular and protein structure of your skin.

3. Parabens: These are ingredients used as preservatives, they can cause a hormonal imbalance in your body and in your skin.

4. Phthalates: These are chemicals that are used to increase the flexibility of plastic. A chemical that is used for plastic should not be used on your skin.

5. Sulfates: They can strip the skin of your natural oils, which can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and weaken your skin’s defense system.

6. Quaternium-15: This is a preservative used in skincare, that releases formaldehyde. Yes, formaldehyde. Which is what they use to preserve dead bodies. It is carcinogenic and not healthy to use on your skin.

7. Petroleum Derivatives: These ingredients cause an oily layer on your skin that clogs pores and causes acne and skin congestion.

8. Artificial Dyes: These can cause skin irritation and redness in your skin.

Be careful of what you use on your skin and always read the ingredient list before purchasing a product. Keep you and your skin healthy and safe.
